Species Information
Scientific Name: Acanthurus dussumieri
Location & Habitat: The palani is a fish native to Hawai‘i. Its scientific name is acanthurus dussumieri, but it is most commonly known as the eye-stripe surgeonfish. These fish have colorful bodies with colors like black, blue, yellow, and white. The palani fish can grow to a length of about 45 centimeters. You can find this fish resting under ledges of about six or more meters. This type of fish is herbivorous
Description:These spines are very sharp and act as swords for protection. When sparring with competition, the Surgeonfish will try to sideswipe its rival. This mutual attempt at sideswiping appears as a circular dance to a snorkeler but in fact is quite the opposite! These fish are mostly herbivores. They have small mouths which are designed for scraping alae off rocks and coral. They are very colorful, and found mostly in shallow waters.
The Palani rests during the day usually under ledges. This Surgeonfish is distinctive for his yellow or bright white scalpel on the tail whereas all other Surgeonfish have black scalpels. He has a conspicuous yellow band over his eyes and a beautiful bright blue or dark blue tail speckled with black spots. Palani is a Hawaiian word meaning "stink" because of the strong odor this fish has when cooked.
