We say it all the time – We at Gray, love and respect our charter boat captains! The information coming in from Gray Taxidermy charter boat Captains is invaluable! We thrive on collecting information from you – the ones in the field – the opinions that matter. In turn, we try and pass on any information or techniques we can in an effort to help other charter boats make their business a success. The stronger we grow in business – the bigger voice as an industry we get to have. We recently had a very successful captain from South Florida do a “ride along” with our rep on the docks, “Mango.” What this captain observed was very interesting to us, so we wanted to share his story with you:
“I had the privilege of shadowing Mango on his routes in Southeast Florida for a week, and let me tell you, I received a huge eye-opener. The faces of excitement I got to see from customers mounting fish and telling their stories were priceless! The boats that make mounting fish a part of their daily business seemed to have much happier customers, that wanted to celebrate their day, compared to the guys just piling up their catch. It really made me realize the importance of a fish mount to the customer.
I can honestly say I have a completely different outlook now than I had before. Instead of focusing on catching more fish than every other boat on my dock for simple ego purposes, I would without a doubt focus on the customer and make sure that they catch that trophy to provide them with a memory that will last a lifetime! Not only will you have a customer for life, but as we all know, the crew will benefit as well ― repeat business, better tips, etc. Trust me guys, that trophy on the wall goes a whole lot further for you and the customer than throwing up those 50 fish that you know go to waste! Put the egos aside, stop worrying about the tips (which are out of your control) and start mounting more fish”!!!
With the start up of this newsletter, we knew we wanted to highlight our captains and bring you information on what’s happening with Gray Taxidermy. The Captain of the Month and the Mate of the Month program has been a big hit!
The determination of Captain of the month comes from a random drawing. Each month, for every order placed with Gray Taxidermy, the captain’s name will be entered in a drawing. At the end of the month, one name will be drawn from all entries.
The winner will be featured in the following month’s newsletter as the Captain of the Month, and will be awarded REACTORS GRAVITON 2 watch (The Official Watch of Gray Taxidermy) as well as a Trophy plaque with an engraved plate showing them as Captain of month. And if you’re wondering – yes, you can win with only one order! Get as many orders in as you can to increase your chances!
We would like to recognize and applaud the involvement of our sponsors of both of these programs. As mentioned, REACTOR Watches have given us a really cool watch to give away to our Captain of the Month for each newsletter. Costa Del Mar also stepped up to supply a pair of Sunglasses for the Mate of the Month. It’s really awesome each month to get the names pulled and let the winners know! So keep up the good work!
Another Sponsor we want to thank is Pelagic! They have stood behind every program for Captains and Mates, and they understand how important you guys are to their business. They will continue to support the guys who work in the trade and We Love It! Way To Go Pelagic!! So, BIG Thanks to all these sponsors for believing in Gray Taxidermy and our Captains!
Captain Edwin was born and raised in Cozumel. He has 23 years of experience in the deep-sea fishing charter business. He started in the business at the age of 12 years as a second mate helping his father Humberto Nunez Caamal who then was running the 38’ Chris Craft boat, “La Buena Vida” (The Good Life).
Most deep-sea fishing charter captains on Cozumel acquire their fishing knowledge and expertise from their fathers, older brothers or family (uncles, etc.) This has always been a tradition in Cozumel. Capt. Edwin became a fist mate at the age of 18 years while he was working with his brother Rafael Nunez on the 31’ Bertram boat, “Second Front.” He became a captain at the age of 24, running the 28’ Bertram Boat, “High Ball.” Capt. Edwin has 13 years of experience as a charter boat captain.
One of his fondest fishing memories is - in 2006 while running the boat “High Ball,” they caught a 425-pound Blue Marlin. Actually he is the captain of the 32’ Trojan boat, “Costa Brava.” He fishes every year in most of the tournaments that take place in Cozumel, Puerto Aventuras, Playa Del Carmen, Puerto Morelos and Isla Mujeres. Capt. Edwin loves fishing.
Funny thing is, the order that was pulled for Capt. of the Month is from when Captain Edwin was filling in for another boat captain that got sick. Since Edwin didn’t have a fishing charter that day, he said he could take the charter and that Wahoo order ended up making him captain of the month.
Carlos Machado was born in the northern part of Mexico. He traveled to Cancun around 20 years ago and soon after started working in the Sport Fishing business.
He has worked for Aquaworld for about 18 years now! His friends will tell you that Charly is a very friendly, nice, hard working guy. It doesn’t matter who he is taking out fishing or the conditions – he always gives 100%! Luis Basurto of Aquaworld told us, “as far as selling trophies, I don’t know anyone better than him! He is a natural, I wish I could clone him”!
Good job Charly! We at Gray Taxidermy really appreciate everything you do for this industry. Enjoy your new Costa Del Mar, Blue Mirror 580 Fathom sunglasses. As always, the Mate of the Month comes from a random drawing from all the previous month’s orders. Thanks to Costa Del Mar for agreeing to sponsor this monthly drawing for Gray Taxidermy Mates!!
We are always looking to team up with top-quality companies that have
the drive and passion to look out for our Captains and Mates.
Thank-you so much for your support!
