I recently had the pleasure of speaking with one of our captains in Costa Rica on the phone. He mounts a solid number of fish per year and maintains a consistent book of repeat customers, while always growing with new clients. He is a “top notch” fisherman and all around great guy! As I proceeded to “thank” him for his business and express my appreciation for all he does for us here at Gray Taxidermy, he immediately explained to me what a vital part of his business Gray is for him.
He began thanking me for the opportunity to make extra earnings and what that does for him, as a husband and father, to help him provide for his family in a way he could not without Gray Taxidermy being part of his business. That conversation was truly moving to me. I have to tell you, we really do appreciate the hard life of being a charter boat captain, so to hear the gratitude back was mind blowing!
I felt great after speaking with him, knowing and feeling how special the relationships are, everywhere, between the Gray Taxidermy team and all of you! I know Gray Taxidermy Captains and Mates are The Best in the World! To know we can make a difference in your lives, makes ours better. To you and your family from everyone here at Gray Taxidermy,
Bill

It’s almost Father’s Day! A time to remember and honor your Dad. In many cases, “Dad” was the one person that got each one of us into fishing. Being a Dad can be complex, you’re a leader, head of the family, provider, stabilizer, teacher, law maker, role model…… We at Gray Taxidermy want to extend our appreciation for your time and efforts and wish all the dad’s out there, Happy Father’s Day!
With the start up of this newsletter, we knew we wanted to highlight our captains and bring you information on what’s happening with Gray Taxidermy. The Captain of the Month and the Mate of the Month program has been a big hit!
The determination of Captain of the month comes from a random drawing. Each month, for every order placed with Gray Taxidermy, the captain’s name will be entered in a drawing. At the end of the month, one name will be drawn from all entries.
The winner will be featured in the following month’s newsletter as the Captain of the Month, and will be awarded REACTORS GRAVITON 2 watch (The Official Watch of Gray Taxidermy) as well as a Trophy plaque with an engraved plate showing them as Captain of month. And if you’re wondering – yes, you can win with only one order! Get as many orders in as you can to increase your chances!
We would like to recognize and applaud the involvement of our sponsors of both of these programs. As mentioned, REACTOR Watches have given us a really cool watch to give away to our Captain of the Month for each newsletter. Costa Del Mar also stepped up to supply a pair of Sunglasses for the Mate of the Month. It’s really awesome each month to get the names pulled and let the winners know! So keep up the good work!
Another Sponsor we want to thank is Pelagic! They have stood behind every program for Captains and Mates, and they understand how important you guys are to their business. They will continue to support the guys who work in the trade and We Love It! Way To Go Pelagic!! So, BIG Thanks to all these sponsors for believing in Gray Taxidermy and our Captains!
Captain Charlton has been charter fishing for over 20 years, most of those years as a mate with Captain Mike Russell, owner/operator of Chubasco Charters, located in Nassau, Bahamas, at Harbour View Marina on East Bay Street. Capt. Mike says, “Capt. Charlton is one of the hardest working and fish producing captains you will find anywhere in the world.”
Growing up in Nassau, Capt. Charlton was introduced to fishing by his father at a very young age and decided to make fishing his career early in life. Capt. Charlton mated with Capt. Mike Russell on Chubasco III for many years before getting his captains license a few years ago. When the position of captain became available on Chubasco V, Charlton was promoted.
Captain Charlton’s specialty in the Bahamas is light tackle fishing. Working the cockpit is the one thing that he misses. Often when light tackle fishing with clients, Capt. Charlton will put the mate at the helm. As Captain Charlton says, “I am not here to tease you, I am here to please you.”
The determination of Captain of the month comes from a random drawing. Each month, for every order placed with Gray Taxidermy, the captain’s name will be entered in a drawing. At the end of the month, one name will be drawn from all entries. The winner will be featured in the following month’s newsletter as the Captain of the Month, and will be awarded REACTORS GRAVITON 2 watch (The Official Watch of Gray Taxidermy) as well as a Trophy plaque with an engraved plate naming them as Captain of month. The more orders turned in, the better your chances. Congratulations Captain Charlton!
I’ve been fishing my whole life. I started out fresh water fishing as a kid in Kansas. I moved to Maui 14 years ago and started deep sea fishing with friends on their trailer boats. One day a friend, who is a charter captain, asked me if I would like to help him catch bait for his charter. I had so much fun, I started to bait fish any chance I got. From that point, I started to second crew on any boat I could get on. That led to becoming 1st mate on the “Kai Akua,” a 35-foot Cabo in Lahaina Harbour.
One day on a charter we had a family of four with us. The father and son already had reeled in several mahi-mahi so I turned to the teenage daughter (who didn’t fish) and told her to get in the fighting chair. She brought in a nice mahi-mahi - her first ever! She was hooked instantly and informed her brother and father that the next fish was hers. It’s great to turn someone on to fishing. Aloha from Hawaii
For Johnny’s luck of the draw this month, he will be awarded a plaque from Gray Taxidermy as well as a pair of Blue Mirror 580 Fathom sunglasses from Costa Del Mar. Congratulations Johnny!
You asked – we are going to answer! In efforts to continue bringing support and training to the docks, we have brought on a little help. Gray Taxidermy would like to introduce and welcome Scott Thomas to the North Carolina area. “Scotty” is originally from Gainesville, Florida, and educated at the University of Florida in business. Scotty has spent the last several years as a Charter Boat Mate/Captain out of Hillsboro Inlet in South Florida.
Not only has Scotty been a consistent mounter (2-3 per week) in a tough economy, he is great with customer relations. Scotty joins the Gray Taxidermy team working the vast marinas in the Outer Banks from Rudy Inlet down through Hatteras and everywhere in between. Scotty is in the field to assist in training and making sure our Captains and Mates have all the sales tools possible to be successful in mounting more trophies. So make sure you stop him and say “Hi,” get your T-shirts, pricelist, whatever sales tools you might need. Scotty is more than happy to explain any and all of our programs that are working for Captains and Mates all over the globe. He usually starts at 5am and doesn’t usually stop until 8pm. Scotty is “one of us” and can really be beneficial to those looking for an edge or who may need some basic training for themselves or their mates in writing up orders.
At Gray Taxidermy, we strive to make sure you have enough stickers, T-shirts, a variety of sales tools and trophy flags….. all this will help brand our name on your boat. The customer in most cases does not know much about the fishing industry. The more the customer can see the name, the logo, the more familiar the name Gray Taxidermy becomes and the easier it is to assure your customer that we are a real and reputable company and the ONLY choice to mount their trophy catch. If you need any supplies, just give us a call – everyone at Gray is ready to help! Remember to plant the seed early; have a great day and write it up! At the end of the day, confidence and excitement will allow you to write the order.
We are always looking to team up with top-quality companies that have
the drive and passion to look out for our Captains and Mates.
Thank-you so much for your support!
