The Blackfin Tuna normally caught by sport fishermen have an average size of approximately 19 to 28 inches , and weight ranging from 7 to 30 pounds. Pectoral fins are somewhat long, reaching below the origin of the second dorsal fin. These fish are highly migratory species and are found in tropical and temperate oceanic waters often not far from the coast line. Common in the western Atlantic from Brazil to Cape Cod. The Blackfin tuna form large mixed schools along with the skipjack tuna. Its spawning grounds are located well offshore.
This tuna feeds on various fish, squid, shrimp, and crabs and often in surface waters. The Blackfin Tuna may live past 5 years of age. Live or rigged baitfish would be the best natural bait, while spoons, jigs, streamers and plugs make for the preferred artificial bait.
